Dr. Linda Maier, Spanish Professor, UAHuntsville
It gives me pleasure to provide an open letter of recommendation for Language That Works, LLC. From 9 May to 6 June 2015, I accompanied a group of eleven students from the University of Alabama in Huntsville on a Costa Rica study abroad trip coordinated by LTW. After several years working with another provider in first Mexico and then Spain, UAH decided to partner with LTW, a Huntsville, AL-based company providing customized study abroad services at affordable rates.
Throughout the process, LTW managing partners Renée Ryan and Flora Santor made themselves available and provided detailed and well-organized plans, schedules, and materials. They worked with us to take the all the necessary steps to arrange for a successful study abroad trip that met our students’ needs. They assisted with advertising the program and student recruitment, pre-departure preparation, in-country study abroad, and program evaluation.
Language That Works served as the intermediary with the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica in Heredia and arranged for UAH students to take courses with native Costa Rican instructors on the UNA campus. Furthermore, LTW arranged for the following: family homestays with meals and laundry, welcome and departure dinners, pre-trip and in-country orientation sessions, local bus and walking tours of San Joaquín and Heredia, afternoon cultural activities (cooking, conversation, and dance classes, movie nights, medicinal plant excursion), and optional weekend excursions to various destinations (such as the capital city of San José, volcanoes, a national park, and a soccer game). LTW’s in-country partner providers are without exception hard-working, helpful, and friendly.
Costa Rican native Flora Santor served as the in-country representative for UAH’s 2015 study abroad trip. Flora arrived before our group, met us at the airport, and saw us off at the end of the four-week trip. She was invariably patient, courteous, and unflappable. She was extremely accommodating and consulted with me on numerous issues, especially those related to academics, to ensure a successful experience and optimal student satisfaction.
While I am a veteran teacher and have traveled extensively in Spanish-speaking countries, summer 2015 was my first trip leading a student group and my first visit to Central America. The professional services provided by Language That Works not only eased my trepidations about taking a group of college students abroad but allowed me to enjoy a month in beautiful Costa Rica. Flora and Renée make every effort possible to foresee and provide for every conceivable circumstance, and I cannot speak highly enough of them and their company. I recommend LTW absolutely without reservation.
